1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry, with a specialization in the structural biology of viruses

Summary of PhD Program:

In your PhD studies, you will carry out research aimed at dissecting how virus particles assemble. You will characterize multi-component complexes involved in the assembly of viruses from the family Pneumoviridae and compare these to related viral families. Using a multi-modal structural biology and biophysics approach you will analyze structure and dynamics of these complexes to dissect the steps of viral assembly. You will employ both reduced in vitro systems to gain high resolution information, as well as large assemblies to gain ultrastructural insight. You will be provided opportunities to learn operation of cryogenic electron microscopes, 3D structure refinement, and model refinement. You will characterize interactions of viral proteins with lipids and their crosstalk with other binding events.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Architecture with a focus on Climate Adaption and the Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Summary of PhD Program:

At 64° latitude, interior landscapes offer interesting possibilities to extend growing seasons and diversify crops, while reducing energy consumption and providing hybrid living spaces between inside and outside. Retrofitting the existing building stock, repurposing vacancies, and expanding our building performance through circular systems may accumulatively have a positive systemic impact both in terms of reducing water and energy consumption, as well as food miles, while buffering existing infrastructure networks and enabling local food production on site. Climate change demands a recalibration of our built environment to become more resource-efficient and more resilient. The research group Designing Cycles at 64° (DC64°) is set out to turn buildings and their inhabitants from being consumers to becoming producers to transform our ecological footprint into a positive one.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Geography – Carbon cycling in northern lakes

Summary of PhD Program:

Northern high-latitudes are subject to pronounced warming, with expected major impacts on the numerous lake ecosystems and the services they provide. Recent research stress that responses of northern lakes to a warming climate are different from expectations based on conventional knowledge. This includes key functions such as biomass production, greenhouse gas exchange and carbon burial in sediments. This project aims to fundamentally advance the understanding of climate impacts on carbon cycling in northern lakes. Specific objectives include to assess direct (e.g. via water temperature) and indirect (e.g. via changes in carbon export from land) climate impacts on carbon cycling (e.g. respiration, photosynthesis, carbon burial) in lakes, and how these effects depend on lake and landscape characteristics.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The ‘Ultrafast Nanoscience’ group at Umeå University is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate interested in performing research on ultrafast spectroscopy in condensed matter nanosystems. The PhD project interfaces exciting fields of research, including ultrafast science, photonics and chemistry, with an overarching goal to understand the dynamics of electronic degrees of freedom in nanostructured materials. The PhD student will study the nonlinear optical properties and the ultrafast electron dynamics in molecular photoswitches coupled to photonic nanostructures and explore the fascinating physics of the so called molecular polaritons at ultrashort timescales. The project results will disclose novel mechanisms to control molecular photoswitches for applications in quantum computing and/or optical transistors.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD student will study the physical mechanisms underlying light-matter interactions in nanoscale magnetic materials. By combining time-resolved (pump-probe) spectroscopy, finite element method and micromagnetic modelling, the candidate will design and realize plasmonic excitations affecting magnetic phenomena on ultrafast timescales. The project will disclose novel mechanisms which might have a huge impact on forthcoming light-driven data processing technologies.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computing Science with focus on Software Security

Summary of PhD Program:

Our societies rely on computer systems and on software stacks. Unfortunately, software systems contain bugs and vulnerabilities which can be exploited by malicious actors. Most software systems are being built with code from third parties. This code, often packaged as a software library, forms an essential part of the so-called software supply chain. The doctoral student will develop tools and methodologies to conduct an in-depth investigation of the security of the software supply chain. The doctoral student will be able to focus on problems which fit their interest ranging from static and/or dynamic approaches to detecting software vulnerabilities in the code to preventing vulnerability execution at runtime.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry, with a specialization in organic chemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

The main objective with this doctoral research project is to develop these molecules further in terms of their activity and selectivity but also to introduce chemical groups/features that make them more valuable as research tools with the aim to unravel the exact mode of action. The work thus mainly concerns synthetic organic chemistry and method development. However, because the evaluation of the compounds activity and selectivity are so central to the project you will also learn different methods to test the compounds. You will also attend group meetings with focus on the design and synthesis of the molecules as well as project meetings with collaborators where the use of the molecules in biological studies will be discussed. Several international research groups with complementary expertise are involved in the research program and regular meetings with these collaborators are also part of the work.

12. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in ecology, focusing on plant community ecology and ecosystem processes in northern Sweden

Summary of PhD Program:

The projects will focus on interactions of plant communities with belowground and aboveground ecosystem processes, and their responses to environmental factors (such as wildfire, nutrient availability, climate change and biodiversity loss) in natural boreal forest and subarctic tundra in northern Sweden, through the use of both environmental gradients and ongoing term experiments. Through the use of these study systems, we anticipate one student focusing primarily on ecological interactions involving nutrient availability and the other on ecological consequences of plant biodiversity loss, although there is quite some flexibility around this. The projects will include both field work over the summer and autumn months, and corresponding laboratory work, data analysis and writing. While it is our intention that the students work on these systems, the scope of the project work is deliberately broad, and is adaptable to suit the specific interests of the students that are appointed.
