Ph.D. position in algal biotechnology PhD position - 3 years (m/f/d) Algal biotechnology Leipzig University, Faculty of Life Sciences, Institute of Biology, Plant Physiology group of Prof. Severin Sasso, Leipzig, Germany Start: 1 July 2024 Deadline: 7 May 2024 The Plant Physiology group at the Institute of Biology, Leipzig University, offers a Ph.D. position (Promotionsstelle) starting from 1 July 2024, subject to formal funding approval. Activities and responsibilities The unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii secretes substantial amounts of glycolate under photorespiratory conditions (Taubert et al., Plant Biotechnol. J. 17, 1538-1546 (2019)). As glycolate is an important industrial chemical, its production in a photosynthetic microorganism opens up the long-term potential to establish a biotechnological industry based on renewable resources. The aim of a new third-party-funded project is to improve glycolate secretion. For this purpose, we want to use physical mutagenesis (e.

About the employer

CiM-IMPRS is a joint graduate program of the International Max Planck Research School IMPRS-Molecular Biomedicine and the Graduate School of the Cells in Motion Interfaculty Centre (CiM) at the University of Münster. The program is jointly run by the University of Münster and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine.

The Ph.D.program offers excellent research and teaching in Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences with a strong emphasis on Imaging. The progam is open to graduates of the biological sciences, chemistry, mathematics, computer sciences and physics.

For more information on CiM-IMPRS go to:

Spokespersons: Prof. Dr. Andreas Püschel (CiM) and Prof. Dr. Dietmar Vestweber (IMPRS-MBM)

For applications in 2024 go "Application".

The joint CiM-IMPRS graduate program of the International Max Planck Research School - Molecular Biomedicine and Münster’s Cells in Motion Interfaculty Centre offers positions to pursue PhD projects in the life sciences. We are looking for young scientists with a vivid interest in interdisciplinary projects to image cell dynamics from the subcellular to the patient level. PhD projects range from the analysis of basic cellular processes to clinical translation, from the application of novel biophysical approaches and the generation of mathematical models to the development of new imaging-related techniques and compounds.

Research areas:

  • Cell and Molecular Biology
  • Developmental and Stem Cell Biology
  • Vascular Biology
  • Immunology
  • Biophysics
  • Neurobiology
  • In vivo Imaging
  • High Resolution Optical Imaging
  • and more.

Applications for the PhD program can be submitted from 5 February to 7 April 2024. Projects start in October 2024 (earlier starts are possible if desired). Applications can only be submitted via our online system.
