Ph.D. position in algal biotechnology PhD position - 3 years (m/f/d) Algal biotechnology Leipzig University, Faculty of Life Sciences, Institute of Biology, Plant Physiology group of Prof. Severin Sasso, Leipzig, Germany Start: 1 July 2024 Deadline: 7 May 2024 The Plant Physiology group at the Institute of Biology, Leipzig University, offers a Ph.D. position (Promotionsstelle) starting from 1 July 2024, subject to formal funding approval. Activities and responsibilities The unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii secretes substantial amounts of glycolate under photorespiratory conditions (Taubert et al., Plant Biotechnol. J. 17, 1538-1546 (2019)). As glycolate is an important industrial chemical, its production in a photosynthetic microorganism opens up the long-term potential to establish a biotechnological industry based on renewable resources. The aim of a new third-party-funded project is to improve glycolate secretion. For this purpose, we want to use physical mutagenesis (e.

PhD Fully Funded Position in Soil Microbiology at University of Tübingen in Germany PhD Fully Funded Position in soil microbiology at University of Tübingen in Germany; Department of Geoscience Faculty of Science, The Soil Microbial Interaction Group at the University of Tübingen offers an open PhD position (f/m/d, E 13 TV-L, 65%) ‘Biophysics of phage dispersal and their biogeochemical fate in soil’ We are recruiting a PhD candidate with experience and interest in soil microbiology and geochemistry to investigate the interactions between soil properties and bacteriophage mobility. This position is embedded within the larger project “The devil in the details: Phage microhabitats as drivers of soil biogeochemistry”. There is growing recognition that phages are key players in soil ecology and organic matter cycling, but the environmental factors that drive phage traits and their influence on microbial function are unknown. The successful candidate will establish a collection of characteri

Fully Funded PhD in Understanding the solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) signal of tree canopies from remote sensing data, Germany

Fully Funded PhD in Understanding the solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) signal of tree canopies from remote sensing data Application Deadline: Open until filled Country: Germany Your Job: IBG-2 plays a globally leading role in retrieving and interpreting solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) measured with imaging and non-imaging sensors at different spatial scales (from leaf up to satellite observations) to monitor the dynamics in vegetation photosynthesis. In this context, the offered PhD position is embedded in a collaborative project together with partners from the German Aerospace Center (PBA) and Bonn University (RSRG). The main goal of the collaborative project is to derive leaf biochemical and canopy structural information from optical and LiDAR data and use this information in the 3D Discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer (DART) model to disentangle the functional (photosynthetic) and structural (architectural) contributions to forest canopy SIF derived from remote sensing observa

Fully Funded PhD Position in genomics of Arctic alien plants, NTNU University Museum

Fully Funded PhD Position in genomics of Arctic alien plants Application Deadline: 1 April 2024 Country: Norway About the job The NTNU University Museum is seeking a highly qualified, ambitious, and motivated PhD candidate for a project focusing on genomics of Arctic alien plants. The project will focus on target alien plant species and seek to uncover their genomic basis of adaptation to the Arctic environment and how it relates to their invasiveness. A warming climate, changes in soil properties, and rising human activity in the Arctic increase the probability of introduction and establishment of alien plant species. In high-Arctic Svalbard and other Arctic regions, the wintercress (Barbarea vulgaris) is an established and naturalised alien species. Hypotheses for its success include multiple introductions from different genetic sources, enemy release advantage related to plant defense compounds, and shifts in adaptive traits. The Phd project will develop genomic datasets, making u
