Ph.D. position in algal biotechnology PhD position - 3 years (m/f/d) Algal biotechnology Leipzig University, Faculty of Life Sciences, Institute of Biology, Plant Physiology group of Prof. Severin Sasso, Leipzig, Germany Start: 1 July 2024 Deadline: 7 May 2024 The Plant Physiology group at the Institute of Biology, Leipzig University, offers a Ph.D. position (Promotionsstelle) starting from 1 July 2024, subject to formal funding approval. Activities and responsibilities The unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii secretes substantial amounts of glycolate under photorespiratory conditions (Taubert et al., Plant Biotechnol. J. 17, 1538-1546 (2019)). As glycolate is an important industrial chemical, its production in a photosynthetic microorganism opens up the long-term potential to establish a biotechnological industry based on renewable resources. The aim of a new third-party-funded project is to improve glycolate secretion. For this purpose, we want to use physical mutagenesis (e.

PhD Fully Funded Position in Biochemistry and Analysis of Traits in Crop Plants at The Leibniz IPK Institute in Germany

PhD Fully Funded Position in Biochemistry and Analysis of Traits in Crop Plants at The Leibniz IPK Institute in Germany PhD Fully Funded Position in Biochemistry and Analysis of Traits in Crop Plants at the Leibniz IPK Institute in Germany; Referenznummer 17/02/24. The research group Metabolic Diversity focusses on the biochemistry and analysis of traits in crop plants that are critical for growth, development and the production of value-added compounds.  Our underlying goals are to isolate and characterize the pathways leading to increased performance in plants used for food, industry, and medicine.  We accomplish these tasks by incorporating multiple -omics based high-throughput approaches for both the analysis of small molecules and for gene discovery. The position on the Organic production of garlic – expanding the range of varieties through selection of plant genetic resources (ObiVonKnobi) is offered through funding supplied by the Federal Organic Farming Program (BÖLN) via the

05 Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular and Chemical Ecology and Evolution  Application Deadline: 19 April 2024 Country: Germany The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) “Chemical Communication in Ecological Systems” in Jena, Germany, invites applications for 5 PhD positions beginning in September 2024 – January 2025. The overarching research topic is the use of molecular, chemical and neurobiological techniques to experimentally explore ecological interactions under natural conditions. The main focus is on the relationship between plants, microbes and herbivores, and their environment, as well as the evolutionary and behavioral consequences of these interactions. We offer 11 exciting projects focusing on different organisms and approaches. Complete list of projects offered including project descriptions . We are looking for enthusiastic PhD students with strong interests in the above-described central topic. Applicants should have or be about to obtain a Masters or equiv

Fully Funded PhD Position in Mapping checkpoint receptor function in Th17 cells in melanoma, United Kingdom

Image
Fully Funded PhD Position in Mapping checkpoint receptor function in Th17 cells in melanoma Application Deadline: 30 March 2024 Country: United Kingdom Award Summary 100% of home tuition fees paid and an annual stipend of £18,622. Overview Checkpoint inhibitors has been a standard of care for melanoma patients but approximately 30% of patients respond to these therapies. In order to improve therapy response, it is important to study the phenotype and function of the various immune cells that are involved in tumour immunity within the tumour microenvironment. In this PhD studentship, we aim to investigate how PD-1 regulates a type of immune cell known as CD4+ T helper cell that produces IL-17 cytokine (Th17 cells). We will investigate whether Th17 cells contribute or inhibit tumour immunity in experimental murine models of melanoma currently available within the laboratory within the context of checkpoint blockade. The student will learn cellular immunology techniques, biochemical and

Fully Funded PhD Position in Geotechnical Experimental Data, Netherlands

Image
Fully Funded PhD Position in Geotechnical Experimental Data Application Deadline: 30 April 2024 Country: Netherlands Job description The PhD position will be in the Section of Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics and is part of a multi-disciplinary research project funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) as part of the DeepNL research initiative Call 2b ( DeepNL ). As a PhD candidate you will be affiliated to the Section of Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics; however, you will mainly work in the Section of Dynamics of Solids and Structures within the same faculty. You will estimate the (shear) modulus reduction and damping ratio increase (MRDI) curves from geotechnical resonant column experiments on soil samples, using models that account for nonlinear wave propagation phenomena. Such models enable predicting the typical skewness of the frequency response curve due to softening as well as superharmonic resonances. Furthermore, a new algorithm will be designed to assign realistic sp

This position is embedded within the larger project “The devil in the details: Phage microhabitats as drivers of soil biogeochemistry”. There is growing recognition that phages are key players in soil ecology and organic matter cycling, but the environmental factors that drive phage traits and their influence on microbial function are unknown. The successful candidate will establish a collection of characteri

Fully Funded PhD in Understanding the solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) signal of tree canopies from remote sensing data, Germany

Image
Fully Funded PhD in Understanding the solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) signal of tree canopies from remote sensing data Application Deadline: Open until filled Country: Germany Your Job: IBG-2 plays a globally leading role in retrieving and interpreting solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) measured with imaging and non-imaging sensors at different spatial scales (from leaf up to satellite observations) to monitor the dynamics in vegetation photosynthesis. In this context, the offered PhD position is embedded in a collaborative project together with partners from the German Aerospace Center (PBA) and Bonn University (RSRG). The main goal of the collaborative project is to derive leaf biochemical and canopy structural information from optical and LiDAR data and use this information in the 3D Discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer (DART) model to disentangle the functional (photosynthetic) and structural (architectural) contributions to forest canopy SIF derived from remote sensing observa
