Activities and responsibilities The unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii secretes substantial amounts of glycolate under photorespiratory conditions (Taubert et al., Plant Biotechnol. J. 17, 1538-1546 (2019)). As glycolate is an important industrial chemical, its production in a photosynthetic microorganism opens up the long-term potential to establish a biotechnological industry based on renewable resources.                Dr. Bhola Nath Verma was born on 8 th June 1943 and was superannuated from the active service as University Professor and Head, University Department of Botany, B.R.A. Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, Bihar (India). He is the pioneer Phycologist who initiated and propagated Phycological Research in Bihar. During thirty-three years of active service, he successfully conducted a number of major research projects sponsored by UGC, CSIR, DST, Ministry of Environment and Forests under various ecological as well as Man and Biosphere Programme and Ministry of Nonconventional source of Energy, Govt of India, New Delhi. At least twenty research students were awarded Ph.D. degree under his guidance.                 He supervised CSIR sponsored post-doctoral research and made a basic contribution on the phenolics of freshwater algae in collaboration with Indian Toxicological Research Institute, Lucknow.
