Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The research general objectives are to screen USDA, ARS sweet potato germplasm for accumulation of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) to identify germplasm and genetic markers that can be used in public breeding programs for development of varieties that have low levels of toxic heavy metals to ensure a safe source of food for human consumption. This project addresses a gap in knowledge in the accumulation potential of heavy metals in sweet potato. At the completion of these studies, the expectation is that we will have provided knowledge regarding the variation of heavy metal accumulation in storage roots and will have identified previously unknown sources of germplasm that are low accumulators of heavy metals. Successful completion of this project is expected to have important positive impacts for American agriculture by helping stakeholders anticipate and respond to the potential impact of heavy metal contamination poses to sweet potato production and provide a safe food supply within the US and around the globe. The rationale behind this project is to be responsive to toxic heavy metal contamination of sweet potatoes used for baby food in support of the FDA’s Closer to Zero initiative.

The Salivary Disorders Unit (Warner Laboratory) invites applications from highly motivated late-stage PhD and early phase post doctoral (no more than 2 years out from their PhD) researchers interested in applying and integrating innovative computational approaches for the analysis of next-generation sequencing (single cell RNAseq) and spatial transcriptomics/proteomics data (10X Xenium, PhenoCycler) generated from human specimens (Pranzatelli, et al., 2023 Res Sq – preprint), and mouse models. We are seeking individuals with expertise in single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial biology platforms, and a keen interest in using human ex vivo organ culture models to interrogate the cell-specificity of pathogenic inflammation in the context of systemic autoimmune diseases (e.g., Sjögren’s Disease). We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to study retroviral elements in the human genome and associated somatic mutations in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson syndromes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The laboratory is investigating the immunobiological mechanisms responsible for the suboptimal vaccine responses in newborns and infants. The goal of these studies is to improve the efficacies of pediatric vaccines using adjuvants targeting the pathways responsible for the blunted immune responses. This project is using neonatal mice from immunocompetent as well as various transgenic backgrounds to study the immune responses to diverse vaccine platforms including mRNA vaccines (SARS-CoV-2) and novel delivery systems. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Research efforts will include participation in multi-disciplinary efforts in a nationally recognized training program in support of the FDA’s mission. The candidate will train closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in FDA funded research to evaluate the developmental toxicity of analgesia and anesthesia. The focus of these projects is determining the neurotoxic potential of analgesia or anesthesia exposure in utero and during the first year of life. These projects will be performed in rats and guinea pigs and focus on histological, immunohistological, and molecular endpoints of neurotoxicity. The Immunobiology and Molecular Virology Section studies high- and maximum-containment RNA viruses that cause hemorrhagic disease, including filoviruses and influenza A virus. The section is interested in the pathogenesis of highly pathogenic viruses on every level, from host to molecule to countermeasures. The laboratory uses an experimental approach to increase our understanding of the disease induced by these viruses by developing animal disease models and, ultimately, design countermeasures and perform preclinical efficacy studies. A funded postdoctoral fellow position is available immediately in our group (Inherited Neuromuscular Diseases Unit, PI Dr. Chris Grunseich) in the Neurogenetics Branch, NINDS. We are a translational science lab working on developing treatments for patients with inherited forms of neuromuscular disease. The goal of our research is to develop new approaches for tracking disease progression and developing treatment. We use clinical and molecular techniques to study the disease mechanism, and develop disease related biomarkers to help guide the development of new treatments. The lab uses patient-derived models to characterize molecular pathways leading to degeneration, and is working on designing and testing precision therapeutic approaches focused on the underlying disease mechanism.
