A HIV-1 Envelope (Env) vaccine that elicits broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) has remained elusive, in part due to our limited understanding of the mechanisms of bnAb induction during natural infection. Recently developed simian-human chimeric immunodeficiency viruses (SHIVs) bearing Envs from HIV-1 transmitted-founder (TF) viruses associated with bnAb induction in HIV-1 infected adult individuals now provide an experimental model to establish the mechanisms of bnAb development. HIV-1 Env bnAbs develop in ~50% of chronically-infected adults in over 3-5 years of infection, but HIV-1-infected infants and children more frequently develop bnAbs and do so faster than adults.

The Duke University laboratory of Dorothy Sipkins, M.D., Ph.D. is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral associate with research interest in metastasis and the tumor microenvironment. Our group has a diverse and stimulating environment with projects in basic and translational research as well as clinical trial studies. We utilize mouse models of breast cancer and leukemia to study the role of the microenvironment, including immune cell responses, in tumor cell dormancy, treatment resistance and metastasis (Price et al., Science Translational Medicine, 2016, Yao et al., Nature 2018, Whiteley et al., Nat Rev Cancer 2021,. This work utilizes cutting edge approaches, such as intravital microscopy to track tumor cells in mice in real time and spatial transcriptomics of mouse and human specimens.
