12. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are seeking a highly-motivated postdoctoral fellow to help us launch a new global water potential network (“PSInet”), and to conduct research that harnesses information from multiple environmental observation networks, including a new PSInet water potential database and other networks that aggregate data on ecosystem carbon and water fluxes and eco-physiological traits. The water potential of soils and plants directly controls the flow of water through ecosystems and is a key regulator of plant mortality risk during droughts and heat waves. However, observations of water potential (commonly abbreviated with the Greek letter ‘Psi’) are frequently scarce, inaccessible, and plagued by methodological challenges that hinder the synthetic research necessary to anticipate, and prepare for, climate change impacts in natural and managed ecosystems.

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a multidisciplinary research team studying the terrestrial-atmospheric exchange of reactive nitrogen oxides in forested environments. This successful applicant will work collaboratively with three research groups – Jonathan Raff’s atmospheric chemistry lab (IU O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs), Richard Phillips’ soil biogeochemistry lab (IU Biology) and Jeff Geddes’ remote sensing and atmospheric modeling lab at Boston University – as part of an NSF-funded project aimed at measuring soil fluxes of reactive N from forest soils. The overarching goals of the project are to develop parameterizations for soil microbial emissions from soil and study their impact on the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. Recent work has demonstrated that soil emissions and deposition of nitrogen oxides such as NOx and HONO can have important influences on atmospheric composition in forested regions; however, these processes are inaccurately represented in atmospheric chemistry models.

20. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Successful host-associated microbes sculpt host cell biology in ways that are useful to them. Often, these changes in host biology alter the ability of other microbes to colonize, protecting the host niche for the first microbe. For example, colonization of insects with Wolbachia endosymbionts can preclude infection by viruses. This fact has led to the deployment of Wolbachia-infected mosquitos across the globe to limit the transmission of vectored diseases. We have identified RNA modifications induced by Wolbachia that directly alter Drosophila cell biology and affect the ability of viruses to colonize. Wolbachia upregulates a host methyltransferase to limit virus replication and our preliminary data suggest that the virus genome itself is modified in a Wolbachia infected cell, altering mRNA stability. These data lead us to ask “How does a microbial symbiont alter the epitranscriptomic landscape of host cells?”

22. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

The Ziarek lab in the department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at Indiana University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship. The long-term vision of our group is to decipher the molecular mechanisms of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) allostery for rational drug discovery. There is immense therapeutic potential in the ability to tune receptor signaling using partial agonists, biased agonists or allosteric modulators – and it remains virtually untapped. Our current understanding of biased agonism derives primarily from cell-based functional assays that are easily complicated by receptor expression levels, off-target effects and cell type. Integrating biophysical studies of purified protein with this cellular information will permit a complete molecular understanding. Our work aims to employ a combined biophysical, biochemical, cell-based, and computational approach to characterizing the role of both Monod-Wyman-Changeux (MWC) and dynamically-driven (DD) allosteric mechanisms in the context of GPCR and arrestin activation.
