The Sutherland Lab studies the molecular mechanisms of bacterial cytochrome c biogenesis using biochemical, genetic and molecular biology approaches. Cytochromes c are ubiquitous in nature, functioning in diverse electron transport chains for critical cellular functions (e.g. respiration, detoxification) and are unique among cytochromes due to the requirement for covalently attached heme. The heme attachment reaction is accomplished by dedicated pathways termed System I, II and III. Under the supervision of Dr. Sutherland, the postdoctoral researcher will take a lead role in this NIH funded project to design and implement studies to elucidate mechanisms of heme trafficking and attachment by these fundamental pathways in bacteria.

The Postdoctoral Researcher (PDR) will work on the measurement and analysis of cosmic-ray air showers and corresponding simulation studies. A particular focus will be on radio detection of air showers with the existing prototype stations and the future surface detectors. Additionally, the PDR will be involved in cosmic-ray analyses with the existing IceCube detector, and potentially also with the Pierre Auger Observatory.
