1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics on Quantum information with micro-cavities

Summary of PhD Program:

The focus of this project is to realize a small quantum processor node, where the qubits consist of individual ions of rare earth’s (Lanthanides). Such a processor node is a key unit that can be used in several quantum technologies, e.g. both as a quantum computer and for quantum communication. In order to be able to detect individual ions, the project uses an optical micro-cavity to amplify the emission. To ensure good quantum operations, the system is cooled down to about 2 K in a custom designed cryostat.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in mathematics

Summary of PhD Program:

This project is aimed at better understanding of so-called plurisubharmonic func-tions and their possible singularities. Plurisubharmonic functions appear in a natural way when studying holomorphic functions of several complex variables, and as solutions to a Dirichlet problem for the complex Monge-Ampère equation — an elliptic fully non-linear partial differential equation. In particular, we will study how different types of singularities for the boundary data affects the solutions to this Dirichlet problem. The idea is to attack this problem using a combination of mathematical theory and numerical analysis to do explicit computations. Depending on the candidate’s background and interests, the ratio of theory to computations can be adjusted. Contact person: Frank Wikström (frank.wikstrom@math.lth.se)

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Vulnerability in the Automated State

Summary of PhD Program:

Digital government aims to promote efficiency, reduce bureaucracy, and improve communication between citizens and governments. However, this is not always true for citizens placed in vulnerable situations (e.g., low-income, sudden death of loved ones, low digital literacy, illness) who are not always able to engage independently with digital technology. This project starts with the premise that administrative vulnerability is a new form of inequality, of particular relevance as public administration turns to increasing automation and AI-supported assessments and that it is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed.

The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%). The activities of proteins in our cells are orchestrated to a large extent by chemical modifications catalyzed by specific signaling enzymes. A modification called ADP-ribosylation is catalyzed by 17 human PARP enzymes; bacterial toxin:antitoxin systems can contain toxins that catalyze the same modification of either proteins or nucleic acids. Both PARP enzymes and toxins are interesting from a pharmacological point of view. Despite rapid progress during the past decade, it is yet unclear how the ADP-ribosylating enzymes and toxins are regulated.

15. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Early Languages, Digital Philology (DigPhil)

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of DigPhil is to create a strong and state-of-the-art doctoral research environment in early languages (up to and including the eighteenth century), educating modern philologists who are well aware of the disciplinary traditions but also have solid competence in language technology. The doctoral school broadly defines philology as the integrated study of languages and texts in their historical contexts. Philology continues a tradition founded in the Library of Alexandria in the third century BCE and consists in a dynamic and cross-disciplinary interaction between textual criticism and book history, historical linguistics, various forms of textual analysis (metrics, rhetoric, narratology etc.) and hermeneutics.

Digital methods and tools can be developed and applied in all of these areas, e.g. using AI to restore fragmentary texts, making use of computational approaches in comparative historical linguistics, performing automized stylometry or narrative analysis, or reading and extracting facts from texts with data-mining methods.

The biological function of many proteins is regulated by specific modifications of amino acid side chains. The modifications are often reversible and made in response to different types of cellular stress. Our research is focused on obtaining detailed knowledge of how specific posttranslational modifications (PTMs) of proteins regulate protein function and change the properties of proteins. We study whether PTMs make proteins prone to aggregation or prevent them from misfolding, as a means to unravel the role of PTMs in amyloid formation associated with protein misfolding disease.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this PhD project is to investigate the potential that agricultural practices have to increase deep (30-100cm) soil carbon (C) stocks, while also improving mechanistic understanding of the soil microbial processes that determine soil organic matter (SOM) persistence. Specifically, we will determine how agricultural paradigms with perennial crops, supporting deep rhizospheres, can provide a means to both store C and maintain soil fertility. We will test fundamental soil science theory, and attempt to optimize the contradictive ecosystem services of mitigating climate change by storing C while provisioning plant nutrients.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in theoretical computer science and/or combinatorial optimization

Summary of PhD Program:

The MIAO research group has a unique profile in that we are doing cutting-edge research both on the mathematical foundations of efficient computation and on state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where we do not only conduct in-depth research on different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilise each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise.

Much of the activities of the group revolve around powerful algorithmic paradigms such as, e.g., Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, Gröbner basis computations, integer linear programming, and constraint programming. This leads to classical questions in computational complexity theory—though often with new, fascinating twists—but also involves work on devising clever algorithms that can exploit the power of such paradigms in practice.

23. Fully Funded PhD Position in Pyrogeography of Middle East

Summary of PhD Program:

Pyrogeography is an interdisciplinary research field that studies fires across time and space at the intersection between natural and social sciences. Research on vegetation fires, their spatiotemporal patterns, and their links to biophysical as well as political and socio-economic factors is limited, especially in dryland areas such as the Middle East. Recent research has started to look into vegetation fires in the Middle East, and how they relate to e.g. armed conflict, but no overall regional assessment, that takes into account biophysical, socioeconomic and political factors, has been carried out.

27. Fully Funded PhD Position in thnology within the ERC project Conspirations: Conflicts Over Conspiracy Theories

Summary of PhD Program:

In recent years, conspiracy theories have become an important issue not only to the people who propagate them, but also to those who fear their consequences and design initiatives to push back against the ‘post-truth’ era. The objective of CONSPIRATIONS is to analyse this growing tension over conspiracy theories in Europe. The project proposes an innovative approach which moves beyond an exclusive focus on ‘truthers’ to examine the perspective of ‘truth defenders’ as well. This approach goes beyond the question of who is wrong and what to do about it. Instead, it offers a deeper understanding of the conflicts themselves, which are clearly of urgent importance for contemporary Europe.

29. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, we will build on this approach to answer how essential decision making circuits can be adapted to match ecological needs, revealing which elements are evolvable and how phylogenetic constraints affect functional diversification and convergence in the insect central complex. The project will also aim at further optimizing data analysis and imaging methods, strengthening the comparative connectomics approach. Using our recent advances in data acquisition and analysis methods, we will generate connectomics datasets of the central complex of so far uncharted branches of the insect phylogeny, directly complementing our existing data.
