Call for Admission to 96 PhD Scholarships in All Research Fields at the Politecnico di Torino University in Italy

Call for Admission to 96 PhD Scholarships in All Research Fields at the Politecnico di Torino University in Italy; The Call for applications for admissions to the PhD programmes of Politecnico di Torino is now open. 



Applications for the 40th cycle are invited for the following PhD programmes:

  • Architecture. History and Project, including the curriculum “Transnational Architectural Models in a Globalized World” in collaboration with the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University
  • Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences in collaboration with Università degli Studi di Torino, including the “Biomedical Engineering” curriculum (“Advanced healthcare technologies”) in collaboration with Kansai Medical University
  • Design and Technology. People, Systems and the Environment
  • Energetics
  • Physics
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering, including the “Electronics Devices” curriculum, in collaboration with the National Institute for Nuclear Physics
  • Management and Production Engineering
  • Computer and Control Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Patrimonio architettonico / Architectural Heritage
  • Materials Science and Technology
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Urban and Regional Development in collaboration with Università degli Studi di Torino

2. The beginning of the above-mentioned PhD programmes of the 40th cycle is subject to prior accreditation by the Ministry of University and Research in compliance with current legislation. The activation of the inter-university PhD programme in “Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences” and the joint curriculum with Kansai Medical University are also subject to the renewal of the relevant agreements.

A possible negative outcome of the accreditation procedure and/or of the renewal of the aforementioned agreements, which would hinder the activation of the course, will be promptly communicated to the applicants at the e-mail address indicated during the application phase.

3. All PhD programmes will start at Politecnico di Torino on 1st November 2024 for successful applicants in the first and second session of the selection process, and on 1st March 2025 for successful applicants in the third session, as referred to in art. 5 and art. 7, par. 1 of the present Call.

Art. 3 – PhD scholarships: nature and amount:

1. PhD scholarships last one year and are renewed from year to year provided that PhD candidates have fulfilled the coursework requirements and have been admitted to the next year by the Academic Board. Scholarships are disbursed for a maximum of 36 months, unless otherwise provided by art. 36, par. 2 of the Regulations for doctoral programmes of Politecnico di Torino.

2. The gross annual amount of a PhD scholarship for the A.Y. 2024/25 is € 18.854,52, including social security contributions charged to the scholarship recipient. The net monthly rate is € 1.386 (unless welfare rates change). Scholarship recipients are exempted from paying the local income tax and the personal income tax (IRPEF). The scholarship amount is subject to the deductions of the INPS contributions (Gestione Separata), two thirds of which are charged to Politecnico di Torino and one third is borne by the recipient. The amount of the scholarship will be increased by 50% proportionally to any periods of study and research abroad in accordance with current legislation.

It also includes a budget for research activities available to the PhD candidate, equal to 10% of the total cost of the scholarship, to be used over the 36 months of activity.

3. The following categories of applicants cannot receive any PhD scholarship:

a) individuals who have already received a scholarship for a PhD programme in Italy;

b) civil servants who are on special leave but still receive their salary and social security contributions;

c) research fellows/assegnisti di ricerca (see art. 2, par. 2);

d) individuals who have a contract of “Alta Formazione e Ricerca” (art. 45 of Legislative Decree no. 81/2015).

Art. 4 – How to accept or decline on offer of admission for a fully-funded PhD position with predefined research topic or for a PhD position offered in apprenticeship format

  1. Applicants interested in competing for one or more PhD scholarships with predefined research topic and/or in any PhD positions offered in apprenticeship format must carefully check the research topic and competencies required to carry out the specific research project, illustrated in the information sheet of each scholarship (they can contact the Professor associated with the scholarship, if needed).
  2. They are also required to follow the online procedure available on the online application Apply@polito platform (see the following art. 7, par. 1) and select up to a maximum of 5 options starting from 5 days before the beginning of the interviews of the relevant PhD programme and until 12.00 p.m. (noon, CET time) of the day before the interview. It is specified that the starting date of the interviews is set by each Admissions Committee and communicated according to the procedures outlined in the subsequent art. 9.

Applicants who want to compete for a PhD position renouncing to all PhD scholarships (either with predefined research topic or with own research topic) or applicants who do not intend to compete for any PhD position offered in apprenticeship format must explicitly renounce their right to receive them.

They are required to follow the on-line procedure available on the online application Apply@polito platform (see art. 7, par. 1) and select the scholarship-waiver option, starting from 5 days before the beginning of the interviews of the relevant PhD programme and up to 12.00 p.m. (noon, CET time) of the day before the interviews. Choices cannot be modified. It is specified that the starting date of the interviews is set by each Admissions Committee and communicated according to the procedures outlined in the subsequent art. 9.

It is understood that, if there are no PhD positions without scholarship, renouncing to all scholarships or PhD positions offered in apprenticeship format will result in application being rejected, with the exception of the PhD positions reserved to research fellows.

Art. 6 – Admissions requirements:

1. In order to apply for a PhD programme, applicants must meet the following requirements on the deadline for application submission for each session (art. 7, par. 1): Applicants with an academic qualification (2nd level) obtained in Italy, Applicants with an academic qualification (2nd level) obtained abroad

a) Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale) or Laurea specialistica or academic degree belonging to the university system pre-dating M.D. no. 509 of 3rd November 1999, as amended by M.D. no. 270 of 22nd October 2004 – with minimum final grade: 95/110. Academic qualification valid for admis-sion to a PhD programme in their country (see the following par. 2) with the mini-mum average grade of the exams as il-lustrated in Annex 2.

b) English language certificate – level B2 (valid regardless of the date of conferral) as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The language certificates accepted by Politecnico di Torino are available at https://didattica.polito.it/cla/en/certificates , clicking on “Table of 23/09/2019 updated on 22/12/2022”.

Certificates which are not listed in the above-mentioned table will not be accepted. Applicants with an Italian or foreign academic qualification, who fall into one of the cases of exemptions listed in Annex 3 of the Call, are not required to present the English language certificate.
