PhD Studentship - Algae PhDs fellowship UK

PhD Studentship - Algae        Dr Jonathan Lee ,  Dr Gary Stephen Caldwell  Friday, May 31, 2024  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide) About the Project PhD project part of the  CDT in Process Industries: Net Zero . The successful PhD student will be co-supervised by academics from the  Process Intensification Group  at Newcastle University.  Microalgae are playing increasingly prominent roles in wastewater bioremediation, where their well-known ability to absorb metals, nitrogen and phosphorous is used in solar driven processes that clean up the wastewater. A process co-developed by Newcastle University and Northumbrian Water Ltd (NWL) and installed at the Bran Sands treatment works on Teesside, uses an ammonophilic microalga ( Chlorococcum  sp.) originally isolated from Bran Sands to remediate ammonium from the site’s anaerobic digesters. The process is stable, well characterised, and is being implemented at scale. It is central to NWL’s nutrient neutrality and net zero ambitions

About SOAS

SOAS University of London is the leading Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. SOAS is positioned to play a leading role in reimagining higher education globally, with a new strategic plan as the basis for institutional renewal and revitalisation. SOAS is committed to student responsiveness and research intensity, and is moving towards a new model of international partnerships which is responsive to the transnational character of our global challenges.

About the Department

The Department of Politics and International Studies is a recognised centre of excellence in research and teaching known for its deep engagement with the politics and international relations of the Global South. We are guided by a strong sense of purpose as an empirical, conceptual, practical and, above all, critical resource for academic and non-academic colleagues with a focus on these regions.

The Department hosts a range of world-leading research centres and clusters exploring issues of conflict, racial, gender, transitional and transformative justice, migration, comparative political thought, global security and responses to structural inequality.

About the Role

The Post-Doctoral Research Assistant will provide independent research and administrative support to the Leverhulme Trust-funded project, “Renewing Positive Complementarity: Reframing Justice Relations after Atrocity”. The project is led by:

Principal Investigator: Prof Phil Clark (SOAS)

Four Co-Investigators: Prof. Dan Plesch (SOAS), Dr. Nicola Palmer (King’s College London), Prof. Cath Collins (Ulster) and Dr. Leah Owen (Swansea).

The project rationale:

This project will renew and reorient these established discussions in transitional justice and international criminal law through the concept of “arenas of accountability". We define “arenas of accountability” broadly as the spaces within which responses to largescale human rights violations are debated, enacted, resisted, co-opted and experienced. These “arenas” are broader than the common “positive complementarity” focus on institutional responses at the international, national and local levels.

The role-holder’s responsibilities will include to:

Contribute single- and co-authored publications as outputs of the overall project

Provide literature reviews and other desk-based analysis that contribute to the publications of the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators

Organise UK-based seminars and workshops associated with the project

Provide logistical support for the team’s fieldwork and attendance at international conferences and workshops

Support the Principal Investigator in reporting to the funder on the progress of the project

About You

The successful applicant will have:

Detailed knowledge of the key transitional justice and international debates relevant to this project

Able to combine research and publishing skills with administrative acumen

Capacity to produce high quality written outputs to deadline

Hold a PhD in Politics, Law, Development Studies, Anthropology or another social science or humanities discipline relevant to the overall Leverhulme project.
