6. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This position is one of several postdoctoral positions that are funded through the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) Physics Frontier Center (PFC); see http://nanograv.org. The goal of the NANOGrav PFC is to characterize the low-frequency gravitational-wave universe through radio-timing observations of pulsars. The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a diverse community of NANOGrav members in the United States and Canada and will benefit from mentoring by, and collaboration with, researchers at a range of institutions. The postdoctoral researcher will also be expected to play a large role in the work of the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA), particularly in driving forward its newest dataset and associated gravitational wave analysis, with ample opportunities for international travel and collaboration.

The laboratory of Dr. Alexandre Tiriac is seeking an ambitious candidate for a postdoctoral research position. The Tiriac lab studies how various factors promote or impair the development of the nervous system with the goal of understanding the neural basis of cognitive disorders. Specifically, we are interested in recruiting a postdoctoral researcher interested in studying the role of brain states on the development of the nervous system. We study these questions in the mouse visual system, but opportunities exist to branch out to other sensory and motor systems.

11. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Highly motivated candidates with a background in immunology are sought for a postdoctoral fellowship position in the lab of Dr. Janet Markle at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The Markle Lab (www.marklelab.com) works at the interface of human genetics and immunology to understand how genetic mutations shape immune responses. We study monogenic inborn errors of immunity, which are severe diseases of the immune system (typically with onset in childhood) caused by rare, highly deleterious single-gene mutations. This patient-based research allows us to characterize the mechanisms of these patients’ diseases, and it is also a powerful way to understand fundamental principles of how the human immune system fights off pathogens and avoids self-harm. Our research includes i) finding new mutations through genome-wide sequencing of DNA from patients with severe immune-mediated diseases, ii) diverse molecular and cellular experiments to determine how these genetic mutations impact signaling and effector functions of immune cells, and iii) single-cell multi-omics approaches to understand how genetic variation shapes the immune system as a whole.

14. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

While in adult mammals (including humans) spinal cord injury causes lifelong paralysis, zebrafish possess an astounding capacity to regenerate and recover function after a paralyzing injury. Neonatal mice also regenerate axons after spinal cord injury, and recent studies have bolstered the idea of similar regeneration mechanisms to those in zebrafish. We are interested in the following questions: What are the factors and mechanisms allowing innate spinal cord regeneration to occur? How are these mechanisms regulated? Can regeneration in adult mammals be enhanced by re-establishment of innate pro-regenerative programs? Overall, our goal is to contribute to the development of strategies to awaken spinal cord regeneration in adult mammals.
