Introduction on Prof. B.N. Verma Resource person of AARI International Algal webinar series session 2

        

    Dr. Bhola Nath Verma was born on 8th June 1943 and was superannuated from the active service as University Professor and Head, University Department of Botany, B.R.A. Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, Bihar (India). He is the pioneer Phycologist who initiated and propagated Phycological Research in Bihar. During thirty-three years of active service, he successfully conducted a number of major research projects sponsored by UGC, CSIR, DST, Ministry of Environment and Forests under various ecological as well as Man and Biosphere Programme and Ministry of Nonconventional source of Energy, Govt of India, New Delhi. At least twenty research students were awarded Ph.D. degree under his guidance. 

            He supervised CSIR sponsored post-doctoral research and made a basic contribution on the phenolics of freshwater algae in collaboration with Indian Toxicological Research Institute, Lucknow. He conducted a maiden exploration of edible mushrooms in Arunachal Pradesh. He has published more than a hundred research papers including the establishment of many new taxa of Green Algae in scholarly journals of National and International repute and authored three reference books. His contributions to the field of Cytology of Indian algae are well known by the world psychologists.

In addition to teaching, research, and writings, Prof. Verma actively participated in academic deliberations and chaired a number of technical sessions at National as well as International levels Symposia/Conferences besides delivering invited lectures. He has been associated and Life Member of seven learned Societies, and as an executive of several of them. 

He is a Fellow of four Learned Societies. He was conferred Scientists of the Year 2001 award by National Environmental Science Academy of India and was felicitated by Tribhuban University, Kathmandu, Nepal at its Birganj Campus in 2002 on the recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of Plant Science. He was honored by the Indian Botanical Society in its 26th Annual Conference held in the year 2003 at Zamia Hamdard, New Delhi and by Phycological Society of India in a National Symposium held in the year 2004 at the University of Madras, Chennai.
